For a BBC crew, there is one fundamental rule: observe nature, but never interfere. But that day, in Antarctica, something changed. After a violent storm, around 50 emperor penguins and their chicks became trapped in a deep, icy ravine. They kept trying to climb out, but the ice was far too steep and slippery. Some of the chicks had already died from the cold. The crew could only film… or choose to do something. So, in one of the rare instances in BBC history, they decided to break that rule. They didn’t touch the animals or carry them out of the ravine. Instead, they simply dug a small ramp into the ice and then walked away. The choice was left to the penguins. And they made it. One after another, they began climbing the ramp and making their way back toward the colony. 🐧❤️ David Attenborough also supported the decision, explaining that it was a truly exceptional situation: no animal was harmed by the intervention, and the penguins were simply given the opportunity to save themselves.
