One of the most iconic moments in Olympic history took place during the opening ceremony of the Barcelona Games in 1992. The person responsible for the spectacular moment was Antonio Rebollo, a Spanish Paralympic archer. In front of thousands of people inside the stadium and millions watching on television, he was handed a flaming arrow. He aimed at the enormous Olympic cauldron and fired. But there’s a detail that many people only discovered years later: the arrow was never supposed to land inside the cauldron. For safety reasons, Rebollo had been instructed to shoot it over the structure. As the arrow passed above the cauldron, the gas system was activated and the flames suddenly appeared, creating the perfect illusion that the arrow had directly ignited the Olympic flame. The arrow passed about three meters above the cauldron and landed in a prepared area on the other side of the stadium. Even with the “trick,” the precision required was incredible. Rebollo practiced hundreds of shots before the ceremony to make sure everything happened exactly as planned. More than three decades later, the scene is still remembered as one of the most iconic Olympic opening ceremonies of all time.
