other Instagram video that did 0× its author's usual
The NFL’s “Pick Me” videos, better known as the Fantasy Files, were one of the most memorable advertising campaigns in American football during the 2000s. Created to promote NFL fantasy football, these short commercials featured real NFL stars performing seemingly impossible football tricks before looking into the camera and telling fantasy team owners: “Pick me.” The campaign was already underway in 2006 and became especially popular toward the end of the decade, when the clips spread far beyond NFL Network through YouTube and other early video-sharing sites. By 2009, the Los Angeles Times reported that there were 18 commercials, which had accumulated millions of online views. What made these videos unforgettable was how convincingly they blurred the line between genuine athletic ability and Hollywood trickery. Cardinals kicker Neil Rackers repeatedly hit 50-yard field goals against specific goalposts; Chris Cooley caught a football through a wall without being able to see the passer; and other installments featured players such as Chris Chambers, Marques Colston, Jason Campbell, Marc Bulger, Mason Crosby, and Laurence Maroney performing absurd feats of precision and coordination. Each clip was filmed with a deliberately casual, almost behind-the-scenes look, making viewers wonder whether what they had just witnessed was actually possible. That uncertainty was exactly why “Pick Me” worked so well during the early YouTube era. Fans debated whether the tricks were real, shared compilations, and even created their own versions, transforming what could have been ordinary fantasy football commercials into viral sports videos. Long before TikTok trick shots and highly polished athlete-driven social media campaigns became the norm, Fantasy Files had already figured out the formula: recognizable stars, an incredible athletic feat, intentionally amateur-looking footage, and a simple final challenge. “Pick me.”
